Asteroid Proserpina Meaning in Astrology: Romantic Helplessness

In astrology, Proserpina is the daughter of the Roman fertility and agricultural goddess Ceres. Pluto, the god of the underworld, kidnapped Proserpina and took her to the underworld to be his bride.

Ceres, however, was so distressed about the disappearance of her daughter that she prohibited any growth on Earth until she had her daughter back.

As the story goes, Proserpina and Pluto established an agreement so that she could spend half the year in the underworld with Pluto and the other half on Earth with her mother.

In astrology, Proserpina, like Persephone, can be linked to our secret selves or “shadow selves.” It also symbolizes the cycle of life and death, as well as change and renewal.

Because Proserpina was abducted (out of her will) to the underworld, her placement in the birth chart can also represent romantic helplessness – forceful marriage, marriage without love, or marriage for benefits.

Proserpina in Astrology

Astrologically, there are multiple themes about Proserpina in your natal chart, but the major theme of this asteroid can be the loss of romantic control, just as Proserpina was unwillingly kidnapped to the underworld.

Regarding love, you can be entirely subject to the whims of others, and your feelings and desires are given little consideration.

There may be a dominant partner who is determined to cause problems in your family and is incapable of seeing beyond their own desires. There may also be a cultural tendency in which a union is compelled or arranged, with no consideration of love in the relationship.

That is, Proserpina, as one of the love asteroids, can signify arranged marriage, marriage without love, or marriage with some kind of benefits.

Other explanations include being paired with a considerably older spouse or having an unhappy parent behind the scenes that believes that your love marriage is a loss, not a gain.

According to Serpil Mostra, Proserpina in transit can signify a period when you may have no romantic control. You may be overwhelmed with an attraction to someone considerably older or someone you know is utterly ‘wrong’ for you.

Relationships made during this transit can be fraught with familial conflict, particularly concerning the mother. Females report that the attraction is less physical than normal, and that they are more drawn to a sense of support and long-term security than sheer desire.

The most significant aspect of a Proserpina transit is likely the absence of genuine love in the relationship and the fact that the union was formed for the benefit of another’s agenda.

According to Latent Thought, Proserpina appears to manifest as an energy of naivety and ignorance that learns a great lot through (sometimes painful) experiences.

She demonstrates where you tend to follow the path of least resistance, to be weak or helpless, and she teaches you the implications of such ignorant or passive responses.
