Asteroid Pandora Meaning in Astrology: Mischievous Curiosity

In Greek mythology, Pandora was the first woman created by the gods. She was given a box (or a jar, as some accounts describe it) by Zeus, which she was forbidden to open.

But her curiosity got the better of her, and she opened the box, unleashing a host of sorrows, miseries, and plagues upon the earth. She closed the box just before Hope could escape, leaving humanity to suffer under the weight of its misfortunes.

Therefore, in astrology, Pandora embodies the concept of mischievous curiosity, which triggers a change in our psyches and is accountable for unlocking the forbidden box – the box of distress.

The Astrological Significance of Pandora: Agent of Change

Astrologically, asteroid Pandora (55) bridges the gap between Mercury and Uranus in the astrological octave progression, according to Asteroid Goddesses.

Pandora is an agent of change because of her perpetual thirst for new possibilities. By rising from the earth, she brings to light what had previously been hidden.

If Pandora is dominant in your natal chart, it indicates that you have a penchant for the unexpected and enjoy stirring up controversy. It also shows what types of “severe” problems you are likely to encounter once you cross your limit or boundary.

Knowledge sometimes is a curse, my friend.

This asteroid makes you very curious about “forbidden” subjects, and once you learn about them, you only have Hope that one day you would never be curious about such topics anymore.

In a sense, Pandora represents the boundary that we should not cross.

But congratulations! You’ve now crossed the boundary!

Mythology of Pandora

Note: Different versions of the myth tell their stories about Pandora differently. Here is one version of many.

Pandora’s Creation

Greek mythology indicates that Pandora was the first woman the gods ever made. Prometheus, a Titan, enraged Zeus, the king of the gods, by taking fire from the gods and giving it to humans. Zeus commanded the god Hephaestus to fashion Pandora out of clay as a punishment for Prometheus and humanity.

Because of the many blessings bestowed upon her by the divine, Pandora is called “all-gifted” or “all-giving.” Her needlework and weaving came from Athena, goddess of wisdom, while cunning and crafty words were bestowed upon her by Hermes, god of communication.

Pandora’s Box

Zeus gave Pandora a jar, which is commonly referred to as a “box” due to a mistranslation. He warned her never to open it. Out of curiosity, Pandora opened the jar, releasing all the evils, suffering, and misfortunes into the world.

The only thing that remained inside the jar was Elpis, the spirit of hope, which stayed with Pandora to comfort her and to provide a glimmer of hope in the face of the newly unleashed troubles.

Zeus paired Pandora with Epimetheus, Epimetheus married Pandora despite Prometheus’s warning that he shouldn’t take gifts from Zeus.

In other words, Prometheus had warned his brother Epimetheus not to accept any gifts from Zeus. But Epimetheus did not listen; he accepted Pandora, who promptly scattered the contents of her jar.

As a result, Hesiod tells us, the earth and sea are “full of evils”.
