Asteroid Alkeste Meaning in Astrology: Intense Loyalty

In Greek mythology, the courage and strength of Alkeste were legendary! When Alkeste’s husband was close to death, she struck a pact with the Fates, the goddesses who determine human destiny, to sacrifice herself for him stead.

However, later in the story, Heracles eventually came to the rescue, defeating Thanatos and resurrecting Alkeste.

Therefore, in astrology, Alkeste symbolizes loyalty, nobility, courage, self-sacrifice, strength, and fortitude. The ability to overcome difficulties and problems in life is another aspect of it.

The energy of this love asteroid in the birth chart is quite chaste, pure, and innocent. It is one that is deeply devoted and full of love, but it is also one that is easily abused by “unthoughtful” words and actions.

According to Serpil Mostra, house placement of Alkeste will reveal the “area of loyalty,” such as the 4th House being the family members and loved ones, while the 11th House being friends and communities.

When Alkeste is in a zodiac sign, it signifies how the person expresses his/her loyalty or devotion. If Alkeste is in Aries, for example, she would be the heroic justice warrior; yet, if Taurus is her sign, she may be afraid to take the romantic leap for fear of being put in a vulnerable “loyalty” situation.

Aspects from Alkeste can further reveal hurdles and challenges regarding your approach to loyalty, what you expect from others, and how your loyalty is treated and/or abused.

When the asteroid Alkeste is in transit, it portends a moment when you must act in accordance with your loyalties, regardless of the cost to yourself.

Alcestis was willing to sacrifice all for her true love; would you? How far do you go in terms of loyalty? Who are the persons in your life who you would give your life for?

The asteroid Alkeste will help you to answer these questions, but you have to “know yourself” first.

Alkeste in Mythology

The story of Alkeste, the daughter of King Pelias of Iolcus, starts out with her marriage to Admetus.

Admetus, a mortal man, received a special favor from the god Apollo as a result of his incredible hospitality towards the deity. In gratitude, Apollo convinced the Fates to spare Admetus from death.

Nevertheless, there was one condition attached to this reprieve: another person had to willingly sacrifice their life in place of Admetus when his appointed time arrived.

When Admetus fell seriously ill and his impending death drew near, nobody except Alcestis was willing to sacrifice their own life for him.

In a powerful testament of love and devotion, she courageously chose to perish in his stead.

Later in the story, Heracles arrives at Pherae after Alcestis’ death. The city is in mourning, but Heracles remains unaware to the tragedy that has struck his friend’s family.

Heracles is welcomed and treated as an honored guest, but as the feast progresses, he starts to suspect that something is not right as the celebration continues. Eventually, he learns about Alcestis’ sacrifice for her husband and her subsequent death.

Therefore, Heracles makes the courageous decision to confront death itself. His noble mission is to wrestle Alcestis back from the depths of the Underworld in his fight with Thanatos (the personification of death).
